For the past few weeks, I've been quite nervous when I use this particular washroom at work. The only men's washroom on my floor is shared and also equipped for people with accessibility. There is no light to indicate that the door is locked on the one at work, and I guess that made my human factors sense tingle.

So it was 6pm Friday, the office is pretty empty and only the few stragglers were left. I pack up, rush out, but decides to take a piss before I go.

Me: *Pushes door*
Lady: "HEY THERE'S SOMEONE IN HERE!" *attempts to cover herself*
Me: "OH SHIT! Sorry..." *runs away*

As I ran, I realize she was the lady that sits very close to me. How was I supposed to know? How am I ever going to look at her the same way again? TGIF with an epic conclusion.

Pretty awesome thread. I used to be really afraid of Volcanoes. I don't really remember who brought us "Volcano" the movie as a video cassette back then, but after watching it I was very afraid of spontaneous volcanic eruptions and molten lava spewing out from sewers. You know the scene where one of the subway guy tries to save another guy by hopping over lava but ended up melting? That really did scare the shit out of me. I remember having to leave for a HK visit shortly after, and before I left I I kept telling my grandma to watch out for lava and run if anything happens.

On Houses

I grew up living in apartments back in HK and I used to think that it was a waste having a house for just me, Andy and grandma. Tenants were a pain to deal with, especially when your room was right above theirs and grandma had to clean the house non-stop. Shoveling the snow sucked until we got a snowblower, and mowing the lawn wasn't very enjoyable having nose allergies. Dragging out garbage from the garage at night was such a hassle. I always thought it was more cozy living in an apartment when rooms are right next to each other and not having to shout between floors. Perhaps living in an apartment reminded me of being a child.

It's funny looking back at the way we think. Sometimes I even burst out laughing at myself looking at the mirror, thinking about stuff I used to feel adamant about. I miss chilling on the porch and looking out at the backyard even though it's not much of a scenery. I miss tossing Timmy's toy down to the basement and having him fetch it back to me. I miss not having to listen to what's going on in the rooms next to me, or listening to super-sports revving their engines on McCowan. I miss the simple things, like being able to wash a car/bike in the driveway. I now wish I have a garage to store all my tools and parts, and not having to look like a thief illegally working on my bike/car in the parking lot. Perhaps living in a house reminded me of being a teen.

Things are always so simple in hindsight.

Happy 2011 everyone!

Set goals. I know the saying has been abused to death, but still shoot for the stars. We don't really get that many decades in our lives. Sure, we may not reach our goal, but get rid of that paralyzing fear of not being able to achieve something. Don't be idle, don't become complacent. A lot of times when we shoot the shit with friends, we wonder where all the years went but soon realizes that we had the exact same conversation the previous year. And that time waits for no one.

I was eating dim sum with Andy the other day and we agreed that if we could slap some sense into our younger selves, it would be something like "Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest what you haven't planned." Looking back at my school years, I had never made the connection. When someone was faster than me, they were born that way. When someone was smarter than me, it's genetics. When I suck at music, I blame not not having the privilege to learn piano when I was a kid. But these are mere sorry excuses for not putting in the effort to achieve the desired result. I was never extraordinary at badminton but I guess I was still pretty good among the average Joes in my phys-ed class. I took for grant all those time spent playing with Jackie and Andy at Maryward club, and it instilled an arrogance in me that I was indeed naturally better than my classmates. When playing against other schools, sometimes I would win, sometimes I would lose. I remember getting mad at myself for losing, but it never occurred to me that the other team probably worked harder for it and thus deserved it. I had a t-shirt that said "no pain, no gain" but it didn't mean anything to me. We do not rise to the occasion, we fall to the basis of our training. Only a lucky few actually acknowledge the importance of hard work early on, and unfortunately I wasn't one of them. Procrastination still has a grip on me, but I try to remind myself that all my small efforts will transmute into something worthwhile.

It's never too late though. I'm lucky to have friends who inspires me. No, not the hundreds that are on your facebook friends list. Stay close to the handful of people that actually gives a shit and get the negative ones to stay the fuck away from you. Come to think about it, we've really come a long way. Athletes, engineers, healthcare professionals, executive assistants, waiters, musicians and public servants. Who else do we need to survive a zombie apocalypse? My favorite question had always been, "whats the purpose of life?". Still don't have a solid answer, but as long as we are being used up in something we ourself believe is worthwhile, then everything else is trivial.

I should be studying other stuff but today I reviewed my first aid manual instead. Sometimes when I am on the bus, especially in uniform, it scares me to think that someone will collapse in front of me but I can't help the person because I forgot how. After 7 weeks of cock, or what they like to call "Confirmation of Combat Knowledge", a bit of me still feels like not wanting to leave. -decide to go Eastside Mario instead of eating in Markham
-road condition + visibility was out to lunch on our way back
-don't know how we missed a turn and went to a farm/town that looked like the one in Texas Chainsaw Massacre
-car skited, could have died, got trapped in a ditch, then thought about the dude we laughed at
-dude tried to help us in the ditch but got stuck too and we ended up helping him out the ditch
-shoveling snow with snowboard does not work
-happy that we ate at Eastside or else we would have starved
-called 911 first time in my life
-cop actually helping me first time in my life
-admired the power of a tow truck pulling my car out of a ditch
-friend drove car, car spun out of control, carved at least 5 "S" on the 400, ended up facing towards traffic, all while I was in the passenger seat, time slowed down, saw my life flash away, also first time in my life
-car came home without a scratch
-took 8hours to get home
-relationship with friend grew 200%

I woke up the next day, and still couldn't believe what happened. That night, it really did felt like I was the main character of my book.

I'd like to think I've grown a bit in these few years. I can only vaguely remember how I used to think back in first year. Am I really different? Or am I just trying to amuse myself by thinking that I am becoming a different person? Why are people so afraid of change? When we say our feelings towards something has changed, what does that actually mean? Is it wrong to feel differently about someone? When the once shy and scrawny kid suddenly becomes stronger and more confident than you, why does the first thing that comes to mind is that "he's trying to hard"? When someone becomes better in a skill that you were once proud of, why do we discredit the other person's hard work? Saying "I could have done that if I tried" doesn't cut it, because the fact is that you didn't. Friends are like passengers on your bus. They come and go, each getting off at their own stops. Some are there since the beginning, but they sit at the back and you don't even notice them. Some are there for just a brief moment, but they tend to be the ones that are hard to forget. Some are crazy of course, but they are always there no matter how hard you try to avoid them. If I'm on your bus, I hope I have introduced myself to you by now.

By the way, 10 pedestrians were killed in the past 8 days. Be careful out there everyone.

That's a wrap everyone, welcome to a new decade! I still remember the hype of Y2K when Andy and I sat in front of our TV wondering if the world would end as the count down approached zero. It seems as though time accelerates as we get older. A person once told me that the seconds we knew back when we were kids does not equal the seconds that passed as you were reading this sentence. Our perception of time also seemingly extends itself when things don't go the way we want to, and shortens when all the stars align. And then there are those moments, ones that you usually don`t forget, when the hands of time pauses for you and that special someone. I don`t know if this is the case for everyone, but I can no longer recall some of the feelings that I have felt. Some were good, some were bad, and they all felt so real. But just like those tiny organisms that floats in your eye, you know they were there but you can`t find them anymore once you loose track of them. You can try to jiggle your eye back and forth to try and make the poor thing stay within your line of sight a while longer, but sooner or later it will just get washed away by the tears in your eye. I thought I had much more to say but I really can`t focus right now. I wish everyone a Excellent New Decade and a healthy new lifestyle! Wishes do come true when you want them hard enough to do something about them, trust me. Take care!

Radeon HD5970, or Hemlock as it was called internally, just got its NDA lifted. For the past 5 months I had been working on this baby and man does it feel good to see it get good reviews. It did get my stamp of approval after all. Did I forget to mention that its the fastest video card on the planet? All those sweat and tears, and all those weekend OTs suddenly feels like they were worth it. Too bad it overkills my 22" monitor, too bad I don't have a EATX case, and too bad I only have a 500W psu. Oh well, who am I to complain. If only someone had told me a year ago that AMD would bounce back so strongly (at least on the GPU side), I would have brought some shares.

I love zombie movies and I think I've watched lots of them that came out in recent years. Well, I saw Zombieland this weekend and it's definitely among the best there is. I guess I land on the geeky side of the scale and on many levels, I saw myself through Columbus. Even if you are not a zombie fan, still bring your bf/gf out on a date to see this. I can guarantee that this one will not disappoint.

I'm going to miss you so much. Though our time together can be considered short to some, it was truly the best and it's certainly something that can't be forgotten.
